Suicides among gay and lesbian youth
A suicide prevention fence on a bridge.
- By a concerned mother: "My child is of sacred worth. Both my children -
one lesbian, one straight -- are of sacred worth. I will faithfully work
until my church truly reflects God's love for both." 1
US: National Suicide Prevention Lifeline:
This line is available to anyone in the U.S. who is in sucidal crisis or emotional distress, 24 hours a day. Dial 1-800-273-TALK. The people staffing the line will route your call to one of 163 crisis centers that is close to your home. They are typically staffed by trained volunteers and are confidential services.
On 2019-DEC-12, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to replace the 11 digit number with a three digit number: 988.
Dwight Holton, CEO of Lines for Life, a suicide prevention nonprofit, said:
"Three-digit access to crisis services represent a national recognition that seeking help for behavioral health and suicidal crisis is just as much a part of life as seeking help for fire, for injury, or for other health and wellness needs."
Setting up the 988 number is likely to take many months. 2
Essays about suicide by lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB) youth:
We hesitate to explore this topic, because the main protagonists --
religious/social conservatives vs. the LGBT community and their allies -- tend to have very strong,
fixed, and conflicting views on the rate and causes of suicide among gay and
lesbian youth. It is certain to motivate many readers of all viewpoints to send
us angry Emails.
There has been a great deal of debate on suicide among homosexual and bisexual youth. There is a general agreement that it is much higher than among youth with heterosexual orientation. But there is a great deal of debate over the cause or causes of elevated rates of suicide among this group. We will attempt to wade through the misinformation, disinformation, and
conflicting data on this topic.
