2020-OCT-16: Easily misunderstood information:
Two conservative online information sources, the Federalist and California Globe, claimed that an "... overwhelming majority" of the people who wear masks catch COVID-19."
Some would interpret this as implying that wearing a mask made a person more likely to catch the virus.
They were apparently referring to the Centers of Disease Control (CDC) study which showed that almost 75% of persons involved in the study who were infected with COVID-19 had worn masks or a cloth face covering while in public during the weeks prior to having testing positive for the virus. The people who were in involved in the test and who tested positive were more likely to have been in close contact recently with a person who also tested positive. Also, they were nearly twice as likely to have recently dined at a restaurant. The CDC report suggested that although they were wearing face covering, they might not have been wearing them properly. Also, they cannot wear a covering while they are drinking or eating.
President Trump stated at about the six-minute mark into his OCT-15 town hall broadcast:
"But as far as the mask is concerned, I’m good with masks. I’m okay with masks. I tell people, wear a mask. But just the other day, they came out with a statement that 85% of the people that wear masks catch it."
Madison Dapcevich, writing for Snopes.com. said:
The study is not without limitations. First of all, the sample size is relatively small. Secondly, study participants self-reported their mask use, which could present an opportunity for false memories or poor recall. Participants were also aware of their infection and agreed to take part in the study, which could have influenced their responses. 1
2020-OCT-23: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Remdesivir to treat COVID-19:
Remdesivir had been authorized for use in to treat severe COVID-19 infections since the Spring of 2020 in the U.S. and since late July in Canada. President Trump received the drug when he became infected with COVID-19 during early October.
By late October, at least 50 countries have either granted emergency authorization for its use in severe cases, or granted its use generally among those who are infected. The drug inhibits the ability of the virus to reproduce. Unfortunately, the cost of treatment in the United States is U.S. $2,340 for persons with government insurance, and U.S.$3,120 for those with private insurance. Since most developed countries have a universal health plan, it is generally free to their citizens .
The Food and Drug Administration released it for general use in the U.S. for those who have the money available to purchase it.
2020-NOV-09: Pfizer's Coronavirus vaccine may be 90% effective!
Dr. Bill Gruber, Pfizer’s senior vice-president of clinical development, reported that early test results suggest that their vaccine may be 90% effective at preventing the transmission of COVID-19.
Their study involved nearly 44,000 people in six countries, including the U.S. It found only 94 infections among test volunteers after inoculation with the new vaccine. No serious safety concerns have been reported.
The new vaccine is unlikely to be available for use in mass quantities before the end of 2020.
Nine other vaccines continue to be tested around the world. 2
Within hours of Pfizer's announcement, anti-axers attempted to discredit the new vaccine.
2020-NOV-13: The distribution of the Coronavirus vaccines:
Alex Alar, the U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary, said that once Coronavirus vaccines are authorized and available to the public, they will be distributed in the U.S. at no cost at major stores like: Coots, Public, Rite Aid, Walgreen's, and Wall-mart. 3
Microsoft News suggested that some people might want to wait for more information to become available before being given
2020-NOV-13: Linkage found between Covid-19 and mental illness:
Lancet Psychiatry published a study showing that 18% of those people who had become infected with Covid-19 developed a mental illness within three months of having been tested positive for the pandemic. The most common forms of illness were anxiety disorders, insomnia, or dementia. In addition, they found that persons who had a per-existing mental health condition -- specifically attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, or schizophrenia -- were 65% more likely to be diagnosed with Covid-19. Similar observations had occurred in previous pandemics. 4
2020-NOV-16: Moderna has developed a 94% effective vaccine:
Preliminary data from an evaluation of their new vaccine among 30,000 participants showed that it is 94.5% effective in preventing COVID-19 transmission.
Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel said in a statement:
"This is a pivotal moment in the development of our COVID-19 vaccine candidate. Since early January, we have chased this virus with the intent to protect as many people around the world as possible. All along, we have known that each day matters. This positive interim analysis from our Phase 3 study has given us the first clinical validation that our vaccine can prevent COVID-19 disease, including severe disease." 26
Unlike Pfizer's vaccine which requires the vaccine to be stored at a temperature of -94 degrees F (-70 degrees C), the Moderna vaccine can be stored for up to 30 days in an ordinary refrigerator, or up to six months at -4 degrees F (-20 degrees C). 5
Later, on NOV-30 they announced that they will seek authorization from the Food and Drug Administration to have the vaccine used in emergency situations.
2020-NOV-18: About COVAX:
Three groups: the World Health Organization (WHO), the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and Gavi, an international vaccine alliance have created "COVAX." This group will attempt to distribute vaccines against the Coronovirus evenly around the world so that people in all countries will have rapid access to vaccines. Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Montenegro, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom have joined the program. The U.S. has declined to participate. President Donald Trump claimed that COVAX was "influenced by the corrupt WHO and China." However, Gavi's chief executive, Seth Berkley, indicated that they expect to hold talks with President -Elect Joe Biden and expect the U.S. to join.
2020-NOV-20: Pfizer, BioNTech say they will file today for emergency clearance of Coronavirus vaccine:
This might make doses available during 2020-December. 6
2020-NOV-21: Death rate from COVID-19 continues to be high among racial and ethnic minorities:
Dan Keating, Ariana Cha and Gagriel Florit, writing for the Washington Post, said:
"Nearly nine months after the virus exploded in the United States, and amid big treatment strides, the disease continues to ravage African American and other minority communities with a particular vengeance.
Black, Asian, Native American and
Hispanic patients still die far more frequently than White patients, even as death rates have plummeted for all races and age groups, according to Washington Post's analysis of records from 5.8 million people who tested positive for the virus from early March through mid-October. 7
2020-NOV-23: COVID-19 Vaccine delivery in the U.S.:
A FDA committee is expected to meet on DEC-10 to approve the vaccine candidate developed by Pfizer and its German partner, BioNTech.
Each state will decide which individuals will receive the first doses. Priority will probably be given to health-care workers, front-line workers and elderly persons.
Moncef Slaoui, the chief scientific adviser for the U.S. federal government's "Operation Warp Speed" vaccine program predicts that:
"Within 24 hours from the approval, the vaccine will be moving and located in the areas where each state will have told us where they want the vaccine doses." 8
