Sexual Abuse Claims have been
filed against the BSA during 2020:

The Boy Scouts of America declared bankruptcy:

Some states, including California, New York, and New Jersey, recently extended their statutes of limitations on child sexual abuse, thus facilitating victims of abuse that ocurred many decades ago to file lawsuits. This extension of state statutes has triggered many lawsuits against the BSA.

The BSA, faced with several hundred lawsuits, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on 2020-FEB-18 .

The Bankruptcy Court set 2020-NOV-16 as the "bar date." This is the deadline for survivors of abuse to file claims in the bankruptcy.

As of 2020-NOV-17, over 92,000 sexual abuse claims have been filed against the Boy Scouts. 1 They had created a victim compensation fund earlier, to help them meet the cost of the claim. They stopped accepting donations on NOV-16.

Lawyer Paul Mones said that the number of claims is "... mind-boggling. It's chilling in terms of the amount of horror that was experienced." 1

Some of the cases ocurred as early as the 1960's, over a half century ago. After that time, the BSA changed its regulations to make criminal background checks on all of its leaders. They also imposed a rule saying that there had to be a minimum of two leaders at every function.

The BSA issued a statement saying that they were:

" ...devastated by the number of lives impacted by past abuse in scouting and moved by the bravery of those who have come forward. We are heartbroken that we cannot undo their pain."

Pfau Cochran Vertetis Amala PLLC is an group of trial lawyers that has been helping survivors of child sexual abuse for over two decades. They state that they have filed more lawsuits against the Boy Scouts than any other law firm or lawyer in the U.S. They note that:

"The national Boy Scouts of America is the entity that filed for bankruptcy. ...The local councils and the sponsoring organizations [of those councils] are currently not a part of the Boy Scout bankruptcy.  This means many people need to take separate legal action to protect their claims against the local councils and sponsoring organizations who may be responsible for their abuse, because those claims may *not* be compensated in the [BSA] bankruptcy. 2

Webmaster's note:

I was a Boy Scout during my early teen years during the early 1950's in East York, Toronto. I went to meetings at St. Luke's, a local Anglican church on Coxwell Avenue. I really enjoyed them, along with the summer camps. Both were very positive experiences. I became interested in the environment -- an interest that has continued to the present time.
