Like many other Liberal-minded folk I have been grappling with, trying to get my head around, trying to understand how basically "good" people could vote for and continue to support our president. AND how people could pass such draconian anti-abortion bills as were passed in Alabama during 2019-MAY. AND how children from "good" families can decide to shoot up a school, church, mosque, or synagogue.
As Thomas Paine famously said:
"These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crises, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value" 1
These next three related essays are my attempt to grapple with the dilemma: How can "good" people support things that harm other people so badly?
